Grottammare. The tower of battle

Image
Torrione della Battaglia dates back to the mid-sixteenth century and is inserted in the walls built when, after the invasion and sacking of the pirates of Ulcinj, in 1525, the old walls were strengthened by a new fortified wall. According to tradition, the father of Pope Sixtus V Peretti also collaborated in the construction of the tower.

ALLEY
Recalls me received your voice,
and not so that skies and waters
they wake up inside me:
a network of the sun that stretches
on your walls that were in the evening
a swing of lamps
from late shops
full of wind and sadness.

Another time: a loom beat in the courtyard
And weeping was heard at night
Of puppies and children.

Alley: a cross of houses
Which are called a piano,
and they don't know what fear is
to be alone in the dark.

Ortezzano, Province of Ascoli Piceno in the Italian region Marche, Italy. Ortezzano for just over 300 meters above sea level, has a magnificent irregular pentagonal tower with Ghibelline battlements erected between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
From the square of the tower, on the side of which stands the church of the Carmine, (note the signs left on the wall by the ropes of the bells) depart streets and alleys that ri…

Genius Loci

Image
The sense of beauty and the spirit that enlivens every place inhabited by man as guides for a fuller and more meaningful existence. Places have a soul. Our job is to find out. Exactly as it happens for the human person. " (James Hillman - The Soul of Places).
"What does it mean that places have a soul?" Have you ever had that feeling, upon entering a place (a city, a museum, a landscape), of being able to feel vividly as a sort of distinctive mark of that place, specific psychic energy characterizing that particular place? The ancient Romans, this energy, called it Genius Loci (the genius of the place). Last shots and stories for The Soul of Places in Italy, continue here.

The old square tower, 63066 Grottammare, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy. Square-plan tower set on a scarp base, devoid of connection structures with the city walls and probably built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as suggested by the type of wall facing. Inside there are two tanks communicating with spring water.

Church of Sant 'Agostino, Grottammare Borgo, Via S. Agostino, 32, 63066 Grottammare, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy The bell tower remembers the rest that Martin Luther made there. An interesting artistic discovery was recently made in this church. To the right of those entering the church, there is a heavy eighteenth-century scagliola cornice, which encloses an altarpiece depicting the Virgin and two saints. On the wall behind it appears a fresco that dates back to the sixteenth century.

Piazza Peretti, Grottammare Alta, Grottammare, Riviera delle Palme, Province of Ascoli Piceno, AP, Marches, Italy Felice Piergentile Peretti was born in Grottammare, a small fishing village in the southern Marche, then in the jurisdiction of Fermo As Pope, he energetically rooted out corruption and lawlessness across Rome and launched a far-sighted rebuilding program that continues to provoke controversy, as it involved the destruction of antiquities. Another curiosity that links Sixtus V to the Roman "vulgate": with his tax reform, not trusting the local officials, the pope recruited his trusted fellow-countrymen from the Marche to exercise the profession of the collector.

Strolling along the waterfront of the Grottammare promenade, on a day in mid-October, still warm but with an eastern wind, makes one think of the sculptures of Pericle Fazzini, The Wind Sculptor. The Levant On The Adriatic Sea, The Levant is the east wind. The name means East, East "from where the sun rises". It is often a moderate wind, which brings clouds.

I introduce you to Grottammare Alta at the "Tarpato" passing by via Patriarca and turning into the alley Torrione, you reach an opening on the landscape, a large balcony overlooking the sea named after the "Tarpato", an art name of the local painter Giacomo Pomili. I introduce you Grottammare Alta, the medieval village overlooking the sea, gathered on the edge of a hill, with rustic houses and small streets, where the scent of orange groves expands. Along the path that leads there is the seventeenth-century villa of Cardinal Decio Azzolino, where Cristina of Sweden stayed. Following the conquest of the city in 1525 by the Dulcigno pirate, the village was fortified with walls, gates and a Torrione called the battle. Currently, it houses many of the works of the native wind sculptor, one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Pericle Fazzini. Riviera delle Palme, Grottammare, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Marches, Italy. Only along the 16 km that wind from the roundabout of Porto D'Ascoli, San Benedetto del Tronto, Grottammare, up to Cupra Marittima you can understand how this stretch of the Marche coast is made. The Seaside and cycle path of the Riviera delle Palme About 16 km completely flat, also suitable for children that can be done in stages. The first stretch, wider, takes place on the renovated waterfront and I recommend short breaks to visit the thematic gardens, the oases and the games for the children. You can stretch out on one of the relaxing benches, practically a chaise-longue to enjoy the spectacle of the colors of the sea. Riviera delle Palme is a tourist area along the Marche Coast of Italy. Castrum Maranum, The old, medieval, incised Marano on the hill constitutes the main nucleus of the village, while it is in the second half of the nineteenth century that, further down, the seaside village takes shape; there are also archaeological sites that refer to the Piceny civilization (VIII-VII century BC) that the human settlements become more intense, as evidenced by the numerous necropolis in the Castelletta district, rich in grave goods. Defeated the Picenes (268 BC), Cupra Marittima became a Roman colony and the ager cuprensis was identified with the Regio V Picenum famous for the production of oil, olives and maritime trade with its large port located to the north of the current country. In this area there were warehouses, the moorings of ships and amphorae that were used for the transport of wheat and oil came to light. With the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the barbarians broke out: Cupra was sacked many times and underwent the domination of Byzantines, Longobards, a…

Walking along the seafront to Grottammare for me is always a pleasure, in summer or winter in any season, so long ago I just wanted to live there. Grottammare Palm Tree Coast together with the municipalities of San Benedetto del Tronto and Cupra Marittima constitutes the Riviera Delle Palme, which for years has boasted the EU blue label. The Lungomare is, therefore, the pride of the town which boasts a long promenade bordered on the right by large palm trees and on the left by the beach of fine white sand. In short, a real little corner of paradise. It is one of the points of the summer nightlife of the town and today there is no shortage of bars, restaurants, and bars to spend the evening. In summer, musical events and festivals…

Italy: the most beautiful country in the world.
Italy: the most beautiful country in the world. We are in Italy and we know that we have one of the most visited countries in the world under our feet, a unique country, rich in history, culture, natural resources, and a consolidated artisan and gastronomic tradition. Yes an open-air museum, in every corner, in every street, in every small neighborhood hides a piece of history, tradition, and culture. If you can meet the expectations of tourists they will talk about it with relatives, friends, in blogs, share photos and comments on social media, encouraging you to visit the white beaches of Salento, to take a photo in front of the imposing Colosseum, to watch the view from a high altitude refuge in the Dolomites, to be lulled in the lagoon on a gondola in Venice, to taste a plate of freshly baked lasagna in a typical Emilian inn ... But there is more but much more. The Italian Small towns and Borghi villages that tourists should see, large and small, medieval and baroque, perched on high mountains or along coasts. The most beautiful villages along with the boot - worthy of being seen at least once in a lifetime - for the kitchen, the art, the landscape, the history . From Cornello dei Tasso, in the province of Bergamo, a medieval fairytale village where time seems to stand still in Scanno, in Abruzzo, a rural paradise . Up to Marettimo, in the Egadi, a refuge in all senses . Click here for a map.
