Grottammare Terrace overlooking the sea

Image
With the irises facing out, extruded from the balustrade, to navigate leagues in the distance, impenetrable to tear, from the last bloodless sky,  your fleeting glimpse, drowning at dusk. Love poem by Hermetic Lunacy.

Grottammare: Architecture and atmosphere of the village.

Image
In the village of Grottammare, in the stretch from the Hospital to the Scala Liszt, and in continuity with what has already been done, it is visible in Largo di Porta Maggiore (area of the archaeological excavation and overlooking the sea), where the cobblestones replaced the asphalt, making the street more in tune with the architecture and atmosphere of the village.

Grottammare. The tower of battle

Image
Torrione della Battaglia dates back to the mid-sixteenth century and is inserted in the walls built when, after the invasion and sacking of the pirates of Ulcinj, in 1525, the old walls were strengthened by a new fortified wall. According to tradition, the father of Pope Sixtus V Peretti also collaborated in the construction of the tower.

THE DARK WILL BE LIGHT. Suddenly, I wake up on a foggy morning ... It is better than the dark, But it is still difficult to see. I want to feel the sun. Beat me in the head. So, go ahead, Never stop, Always walking. Towards the brighter light. Based on the poetry of Hannah Diane Williams

GROTTAMMARE BORGO THE CHURCH OF SANT'AGOSTINO

Image
The church is an excellent example of the sober and essential architecture that characterizes most of the local buildings, even the most relevant ones. The facade is linear, devoid of any decorative element. At the top, above the entrance portal, there are some majolica basins arranged in the shape of a cross, according to Augustinian use, unfortunately very ruined. The facade is concluded by a simple gable roof. The apse of the church, oriented towards the sea, has a fortified aspect, as frequently happens in ancient local churches which also constituted a garrison against enemy incursions: it is embattled and crossed externally by two buttresses. Next to the apse is the severed bell tower which, according to tradition, was reduced in this way because the Augustinian monk Martin Luther was hosted in the convent during his journey to Rome before the great schism. The church has a longitudinal plan, with a single covered nave with a gable roof and wooden trusses. The church has three a…

Grottammare Terraces of orange groves.

Image
In the historic center of the village of Grottammare, they were planted for the most part on terraces obtained, thanks to a meticulous grading work, on the steep slopes that slope towards the sea, using stones or bricks. The ancient orange groves are generally surrounded by walls, built for the dual purpose of protecting plants from the cold north-east winds.
The orange grove, in addition to the production purpose, also responded to a recreational function, constituting a precious garden and a refined park, enriched with fountains, avenues, busts, and connected to the noble residence. To complete the knowledge of the aspects related to this precious fruit, which has played an important role in the history and economy of Grottammare. italianlifestyle itravelinitaly.com | Travel is the traveler in Italy : italianlifestyle

Grottammare Borgo Porta Marina

Image
The ancient village of the city of Grottammare is located on a hill from which the modern city dominates. The Castle of Grottammare was built in the 10th century, of the old castle which was on top of the hill, few tracts of walls and the bases of the towers remain, immersed in a lush pine forest. The castle was accessed through three doors: Porta Marina (not far from the "Torrione della Battaglia") to the east, Porta Castello to the north and Porta Maggiore to the south.

The clouds

Image
Selected poems: FABRIZIO DE ANDRÉ, The clouds, 1990.
They go they come, every now and then they stop, and when they stop, they are black like the crow,
it seems that they look at you with an evil eye,
Sometimes they are white, and they run and take the shape of the heron, or sheep, or some other beast, but this is best seen by children, who play to run after him for many meters,
Sometimes they warn you with noise, before arriving, and the earth trembles and the animals are silent, sometimes they warn you with noise,
They come they go they return, and maybe they stay for many days, that you no longer see the sun and the stars, and you don't seem to know anymore the place where you are,
They go they come, for a thousand they are fake, and they stand between us and the sky, to leave us only a desire for rain.

Genius Loci

Image
The sense of beauty and the spirit that enlivens every place inhabited by man as guides for a fuller and more meaningful existence. Places have a soul. Our job is to find out. Exactly as it happens for the human person. " (James Hillman - The Soul of Places).
"What does it mean that places have a soul?" Have you ever had that feeling, upon entering a place (a city, a museum, a landscape), of being able to feel vividly as a sort of distinctive mark of that place, specific psychic energy characterizing that particular place? The ancient Romans, this energy, called it Genius Loci (the genius of the place). Last shots and stories for The Soul of Places in Italy, continue here.

Via Camilla Peretti, 63066 Grottammare, AP, Italy. Lose yourself in the alleys paved with worn bricks, with views overlooking the Adriatic Sea, beautiful small streets and the scenery that you will observe from a Camilla Peretti street. Camilla Peretti (1519–1605), sister of Pope Sixtus V (r. 1585– 90), was one of an influential group of Roman noblewomen who supported the Counter-Reformation through their patronage of architecture. Peretti’s projects included collaboration with her brother to develop the sprawling Villa Montalto complex on the Esquiline Hill and renovation of the ancient church of S. Susanna al Quirinale, where she commissioned a chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence and built a convent for a group of radically reformed Cistercian nuns. Although Sixtus V is usually characterized …

The old square tower in Grottammare

The old square tower, 63066 Grottammare, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy. Square-plan tower set on a scarp base, devoid of connection structures with the city walls and probably built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as suggested by the type of wall facing. Inside there are two tanks communicating with spring water.

Church of Sant 'Agostino, Grottammare Borgo, Via S. Agostino, 32, 63066 Grottammare, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy The bell tower remembers the rest that Martin Luther made there. An interesting artistic discovery was recently made in this church. To the right of those entering the church, there is a heavy eighteenth-century scagliola cornice, which encloses an altarpiece depicting the Virgin and two saints. On the wall behind it appears a fresco that dates back to the sixteenth century.

Gate of the Castle in Grottammare, Via del Castello, 63066 Grottammare, AP, Italy. The square tower, on the other hand, is rather interesting because it looks like the classic fourteenth-century tower open at the back and reveals a cross-section of the floors where it was fought and those without openings where stocks were stored; surprising to observe how the small part of the wall remained anchored to the tower defies gravity. The walls continue beyond the road going down towards the so-called gate of the Castle. The best-preserved structures are those of the western curtain where there is a pentagonal tower, called strut, from which a section of the thick wall of the fortress originates. The tower is walled on all sides and cannot be visited inside. In the following wall section you can see the headquar…

Piazza Peretti 1, 63013 Grottammare Alta, Grottammare, AP, Marche region, Italy. The museum is now housed in the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which welcomed the original collection enriching itself with other valuable pieces. The museum, inserted in the network of museums of sacred art, promoted by the Dioceses of San Benedetto del Tronto, Ripatransone and Montalto Marche, proposes objects that bear witness to the happy relationship between Pope Sisto V, a native of Grottammare, and his land. A figure of considerable importance to which the entire museum network is dedicated.
