Sassi di Matera Tour

Sassi di Matera Tour By Salvo Cannizzaro, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link The Sassi di Matera are two districts of Matera, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, formed by buildings and rock architecture carved into the rock of the Matera Murgia and inhabited since prehistoric times. Together with the Civita district, they make up the historic center of the city of Matera. Article By: Baldassarri Giuseppe Visual Storytelling License How to use my images Description Enjoy a tour of Matera and see the striking cave dwellings of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sassi di Matera. Explore the city's fascinating architecture, pay a visit to the museum of farm history, and enjoy a stroll through its baroque area. This exciting tour begins at the Piazzetta Pascoli with a breathtaking view over the stunning Sassi di Matera and highland plateau of the Murgia. From here, you can see the Palazzo Lanfranchi, home to the Museum of Modern and Medieval Art of Basilicata, and the nearby Church of the Carmine. Continue the tour through the heart of the ancient dwellings of Sassi, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly built and partly carved out of the rock themselves and furnished as it used to be during the peasant civilization. Visit the church of Saint Lucy of the Malve and admire some striking frescoes and elaborate architecture before continuing the tour towards the ancient Gravina to the museum of farm history, with typical peasant dwellings, as well as artifacts and tools from the ancient peasant life. You'll also get to visit a typical cave house from around 1900, and pass the cave church of Saint Lucia delle Malve. Before the day's end, return to the center of town for a stroll around the town's Baroque area and admire some stunning churches of this style, including Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi. End the fascinating tour at a look-out point over the Sasso Barisano in front of the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral.

Sassi di Matera Tour Tourist Attraction

Matera the City of Sassi UNESCO World Heritage Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world whose territory holds evidence of human settlements starting from the Palaeolithic period and without interruption to the present day. It represents an extraordinary page written by man through the millennia of this long history.Matera is the city of the Sassi, the original urban nucleus, developed from natural caves carved into the rock and subsequently modeled into increasingly complex structures within two large natural amphitheatres which are the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. Top tourist attractions; Sassi di Matera, Parco della Murgia Materana. Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, Materasum Ipogeo, Casa Noha, UNESCO. World Heritage, Sasso Caveoso, Sasso Barisano.

Sassi di Matera Tour Place The Sassi represent the ancient part of the city of Matera. Developed around the civita, they constitute an entire city carved out of calcarenitic rock, "tuff", an articulated and clinging housing system along the slopes of a deep valley with natural and surprising features: the Gravina. Built, elegant and articulated structures alternate with underground labyrinths and cavernous meanders. The result is a landscape of great effect. It seems that between rocks and architecture, canyons and bell towers there is a perfect dialogue that creates an incomparable beauty scenario. The Sassi revive and leave you breathless especially when the lights of residences, artisan shops and restaurants that recreate the effect of a papier-mâché nativity scene are turned on in the evening. The Sassi are made up of two large districts: Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso divided in the center by the Civita hill. Northern Italy. The northern regions of Italy are full of spectacular mountain landscapes, while other areas, especially on the east coast, are flat at the entrance to the Adriatic Sea.

Southern Italy it is the heat of the sun and the color of the landscapes, Italy in its most ancient form, full of feeling and sensual. Down here, the ruins are older, the longest lunches and the wildest and most intense landscapes.
