Montefano and Montefiore near Recanati
62019 Montefiore, Province of Macerata, Marche, Italy.  Montefano and Montefiore near Recanati, are two castles that around the tenth century were built in the border area between the Lombards of the Duchy of Spoleto and the Byzantines of Pentapoli and as such, they underwent the ups and downs of the confrontation between the two domains. The area was identified by the previous toponym fundus Florie, from which the castle built by the Recanatesi at the end of the thirteenth century to stem the arch-enemy, Osimo who faced the other castle, will take its name. The construction of the castle on the pre-existing inhabited site seems to have occurred in the late 13th century. Montefiore acquired the municipal statutes in 1405 and numerous fortification works were carried out throughout the fifteenth century. The raising of the large central tower, documented by the annals of 1429, pushes forward the hypothesis that in those years the sighting function was privileged rather than defense. During the fifteenth century, however, Recanati experiences the new dangers that come from the armies fielded by the great lordships or under the orders of the various captains of fortune and this made it necessary to have new fortification works that were carried out in Montefiore in the second half of the fifteenth century.
