Bastioni Della Fortezza Loreto, 60025 Loreto AN, Italy. The ramparts of the fortress of the Sanctuary of Loreto. The itinerary concerns the imposing defensive system built several times in defense of the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto between 1488 and 1522. Starting from 1453, in fact, when the Turks occupied Constantinople causing the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, the Muslim presence in the Adriatic became overwhelming, demanding the construction of architectures capable of making the Turkish ships desist from the landing. At the behest of Sixtus IV at first and then at the behest of Leo X at a second, the Sanctuary of Loreto was adequately equipped with unsurpassed fortifications. This impressive military system, which made the basilica of Loreto the only fortified church in the world, had architects such as Baccio Pontelli ,, Cristoforo Resse da Imola and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger their own constructing genes, who applied the main ballistic theories here to horse between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The route, which covers the entire aspect of the fortifications of what was called "the citadel of Faith", provides an unprecedented ring circuit around the city and the Sanctuary, observing its walls, bastions (circular and pentagonal), urban gates, and systems defensive.
