The lion has always exercised a great fascination with the man. In many cultures, it is used as a symbol of virtue and positive qualities such as strength, pride, majesty, nobility, and courage. The similarity with the lion, used to praise the power and heroes, is one of the most used of all time.
Altidona, the historic village, situated on a pleasant hill overlooking the entrance to the Valle dell'Aso from above. The territory of Altidona has been inhabited since the Paleolithic. In Roman times there was numerous villae overlooking the sea like that of Barbula, a well-known producer of palmense wine. In the early Middle Ages, the Farfensi and Benedictine monks of Monte Cassino founded churches and castles. In the 12th century, the scattered settlements are abandoned and the inhabitants give life to a new castle around the parish church of Santa Maria and San Ciriaco, transferred to the hill of the current town.
